Designers grace Durban Fashion Fair

Designers grace Durban Fashion Fair

The mastermind behind Sirenga, Leone Shimuketa, and the creator of MN Creations, Mateus Erastus, are showcasing Namibian fashion at the Durban Fashion Fair in South Africa.

The designers were chosen as part of a strategic partnership between MTC Windhoek Fashion Week and Durban Fashion Fair.

The collaboration aims to foster cross-cultural ties, and strengthen the fashion industries of both nations.

The fashion fair commenced on Wednesday, and will run until 21 September this year.

The fashion industry is abuzz with the work of the two designers.

Shimuketa is renowned for her bold and innovative designs, constantly challenging conventional fashion standards, and establishing herself as a prominent figure in Namibia’s fashion scene.

Her daring style represents a celebration of individual expression, pushing boundaries, and highlighting Namibia’s potential for groundbreaking fashion designs.

Erastus is renowned for creating elegant and timeless designs, with his label showcasing sophisticated collections that embody refined craftsmanship and beauty.

In an interview with VIBEZ!, he expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity and platform offered by the fashion week.

“My collection is called ‘Vuncha’, which means renew. I have a collection of 15 looks for both men and women,” he said.

He said this opportunity signifies their brand’s unique initiative, and holds significant value in terms of visibility.

The fair serves as a platform for designers to expand their international presence, promote their collections, and pursue retail prospects outside Namibia.

This collaborative effort across borders emphasises the increasing impact of Namibian fashion on the global stage, and underscores the significance of cultural exchange in expanding the industry’s influence.

Luis Munana, director of MTC Windhoek Fashion Week, expressed his excitement about the development.

“It is a proud moment for us to have Namibian designers grace the stage at the fair. This international platform allows our designers to expand their audience and connect with buyers, industry professionals and fashion enthusiasts worldwide. These partnerships are essential in growing Namibia’s fashion industry, and opening doors for our talented creatives,” he noted.

The fashion week has now facilitated an international exchange for the second time, following the recent event at Batho Fashion Week in Botswana.

He said these exchanges are not only valuable for exposing Namibian designers but also for nurturing skills and creativity, as well as expanding into new markets.

By continuing to support local talent, the fashion week’s latest collaboration with Durban Fashion Fair solidifies the position of Namibian designers on the global fashion stage.
