Chadian-born Adoum Yakhoub, an accused in a house-breaking matter, on Monday allegedly escaped from lawful custody at the Windhoek Police Station where he was being detained.
Yakhoub is famous for allegedly conniving with lawyer Vetu Uanivi and Sergeant Joao Alfonso to have his docket disappear and then making a U-turn and reporting the two to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) last August.
Since last year, Yakhoub has been facing a housebreaking charge. On Monday, he returned to the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court, as he was out on N$50 000 bail, with conditions that he must report himself everyday of the week between 08h00 and 10h00 and 18h00 and 20h00. Sources say after appearing in court for alleged theft under false pretence, Yakhoub was taken to the Windhoek Police Station but he allegedly walked out while the police officers were not looking.
“He also tried to escape while he was at the court,” sources confided in New Era.
During the court, Yakhoub was informed that his matter would be remanded to July 13 for the Prosecutor General’s decision on how to proceed with the matter.
Uanivi and Alfonso face corruption charges for allegedly conniving to have a police criminal docket disappear. The docket concerned Yakhoub, who is charged with housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.
The two faced three charges – corruptly receiving gratification from an agent, using office or position for gratification and conspiracy to commit an offence.
ACC officers nabbed them in a sting operation last August. According to records, ACC agents showed up at Uanivi’s office, Uanivi Law Chambers in Windhoek West and claimed a client had come to make payment, and part of the payment allegedly had to go to the investigating officer, supposedly Alfonso.
