By Deogratias Mushi Maseru, Lesotho The newly appointed UN Deputy Secretary General, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, has said that her appointment signifies respect for Tanzania’s foreign policies. Speaking to the “Sunday News” here yesterday, Dr Migiro who is also the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, said that many countries have been impressed by Tanzania’s human rights record. She added that she was looking forward to working with other officials in implementing the UN agenda especially the accomplishment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Dr Migiro also said that the role played by Tanzania during its 2-years tenure in the Security Council won the country international recognition, which partly contributed to her appointment. Asked what would be her main tasks at the UN, Dr Migiro said that she will struggle to build a mutual understanding between the so-called ‘developing and the developed countries’. She expressed her satisfaction in her years as member of parliament and minister, saying that the period had enabled her to develop strategies to serve others in leadership. “As a minister I have learned how to deal with new challenges – be they social or economical, and I will take the same experience to the UN, which I think will enable me to be a better leader by collaboration with others,” she said. On Friday, UN Secretary General Bank Ki-Moon appointed Dr Migiro as his Deputy Secretary-General. Dr Migiro served as Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children in the third phase government. In her academic career, she rose to the rank of a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Dar es Salaam When Ki-Moon was announcing Dr Migiro’s appointment in New York on Friday he just said: “I have deep confidence in and respect for her, and intend to delegate much of the management and administrative work of the Secretariat as well as social-economic affairs and development issues, under a clear line of authority to ensure that the Secretariat will function in a more effective and efficient manner”. * Reports obtained from the United Nations Website
