Construction of the first sports facility in the DRC informal settlement stadium of Swakopmund is almost complete and will be ready for use by the beginning of next month, the Swakopmund municipality chief executive officer said.
Alfeus Benjamin said the new stadium was built as part of the council’s strategy to have all needed services in all residential areas of the town, and will officially be handed over by the contractors in early September.
The building of the stadium started earlier this year to provide the large population in that area with a sports facility. Another reason was to reduce traffic at the main sports facilities in town.
Providing New Era Sport with updates on the arena, Benjamin said they are busy planting grass and palm trees, as well as making final touches on the basketball/netball court.
“We are repainting the netball/basketball court and adding some paving around it. The wooden pavilions are done,” he said.
Benjamin noted that they will add cloakrooms for players and athletes at a later stage.
The CEO added that the facility will make life easier for the people in that area as they will be able to use it to train or host any events.
“Sometimes the people want to host sports events but they have nowhere to do that because the stadium in town and other areas would have been booked already, which leaves them with no option but to push back their events. But with this being open for the public, everything would be smooth for them,” he added.
