RUNDU – The Rundu Town Council is calling on drivers in the town to be responsible and not crash into the newly installed traffic lights as some are already no longer operational due to reckless driving.

One of the recently run over traffic lights was installed as recently as December 2014, leaving the town with a bill of more than N$200 000 in replacement of traffic lights and roadworks overall.

“People must not damage the facilities, they must drive with care and focus because damaging traffic lights is costly to the council. The police are still investigatingwho are the culprits and this will be treated as a civil claim once they are caught and they will have to pay up,” said Benjamin Makayi, the public relations officer of the town council.

Makayi further urged residents to report such damage once they happen so that the drivers can be aprehended. “Drivers must adhere to the road traffic rules – they are speeding, negligent and drinking and driving, that’s why they are bumping the robots. The town council is busy bringing development to the town but residents must take care of it. We can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again, we need to use the money for development, not just repairing things,” Makayi said.

He urged residents to appreciate the development the council is bringing to the town. “We are working hard to deliver what the community needs but just like everything it takes time to happen so they must just have patience,” he said.
