Earthquake shakes Klein Aub

Home National Earthquake shakes Klein Aub

WINDHOEK – An earthquake on Monday night struck the Klein Aub settlement, some 90 kilometres west of Rehoboth rattling houses but leaving no damage.

Mako Sitali, a geo-scientist in the Ministry of Mines and Energy yesterday confirmed a magnitude 3.6 earthquake was felt in that area roughly  between eleven and twelve on Monday night. Residents that New Era spoke to yesterday described the earthquake, saying it sounded like an explosion. “At around eleven o’clock in the evening I heard something on the roof and it was shaking. However, in the morning when we went outside there was no damage,” said Isak Tities.

He said many people felt the tremor and word about it spread through the small community like wild fire.  “People were phoning (me) and asking if we felt it,” he said. A female resident who declined to be identified said: “I am not sure if it was an  earthquake, but the earth was trembling. It was like an explosion. You know it sounded and felt as if a heavy truck is falling.” She explained that because of a mine in the area, houses are built on top of tunnels, which might explain the occurrence. Early last month, something similar happened in the same area, the two confirmed. “Last month it was the same thing only this time it was stronger and longer,” Tities said.
