EENHANA
President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Sunday unveiled the Eenhana Memorial Shrine, a symbol of remembrance of the Namibian freedom fighters who perished during the war of liberation.
The N$5 million shrine, built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation, was erected in recognition of women and men who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country as they died while trying to liberate Namibia from colonial South Africa.
Immediately after the unveiling of the shrine witnessed by thousands of Namibians who gathered at Eenhana, President Pohamba declared: “This is the occasion of reburying Namibian citizens who were killed during the struggle of liberation and buried secretly.
“I have the honour to unveil the shrine dedicated to combatants who fought for the liberation of the country and whose blood is watering our freedom which we are enjoying today,” he said.
Reburial
At the same occasion, human remains believed to be those of People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) fighters, discovered two years ago in a mass grave at Eenhana, were reburied as Namibians countrywide commemorated Heroes’ Day.
The remains were reburied in a 160-kg casket at a specially prepared grave at the Eenhana Memorial Shrine.
