RUNDU – The Rundu Town Council initiated a far-reaching ambitious plan to provide water and electricity services to the informal settlements on the west, south and eastern part of the town.

Council held a site handover meeting on Monday with the two contractors awarded the tenders to implement the water and electricity scheme.

Speaking at the event, CEO of Rundu Town Council, Romanus Haironga said the expansion of these services will not cover the entire parts of the informal settlements as parts of the informal settlements will be left out without electricity.

“That is due to the fact that we have got limited resources, the budget that we have for electricity for this financial year is N$2.3 million and will cover the second phase of electricity in Kehemu, Kaisosi and Kasote informal settlements,” he said.

The current expansion is a continuation of the first phase as the town council has already done some electrification in some parts of Kehemu, Kaisosi and Kasote informal settlements.

“This is to make sure that our people get electricity, however the only challenge is financial resources, that’s why we are giving small scope of work that can be accommodated within the budget that we have” Haironga explained.

“Those parts that won’t be electrified or get water now, will be accomodated in the next financial year.”

It was noted all informal settlements have water except some parts of Ndama, Kasote and areas in Sauyemwa that are not yet surveyed.

Both the electricity and water expansion projects will take four (4) months to complete from the handover date of September 22.

The water expansion tender which will be constructed at a cost of N$2.3 million was awarded to Ondjove Trading and Construction from Windhoek, while the N$2.4 million electricity project was given to a Rundu-based electrical contractor NAWA Electric and both projects will be monitored and managed by Bicon Namibia.
