Erongo, Western Cape in strategic marriage …twinning to result in enhanced trade, investment opportunities

Erongo regional governor Neville Andre has announced the successful conclusion of negotiations for a twinning agreement with the Western Cape Province.

This marks a new era of regional cooperation focused on economic growth and cultural exchange.

Following a briefing meeting last week with Ivan Meyer, the Western Cape’s agriculture, economic development and tourism minister, both parties reached consensus on the agreement’s final terms.

Andre highlighted that this partnership reflects strong mutual respect and shared aspirations between the two regions.

The agreement is expected to drive collaboration in key sectors, including trade, cultural and sports exchange, capacity-building and green hydrogen initiatives.

“This twinning agreement is more than just a document. It is a promise to our communities that we are committed to working together to create opportunities, foster innovation and improve the quality of life for all,” said Andre.

He further highlighted the economic benefits, such as enhanced trade, investment opportunities and skills transfer in agriculture, tourism and renewable energy.

Green hydrogen cooperation is a major focus, reinforcing both regions’ commitment to sustainability.

Meyer reaffirmed the Western Cape’s commitment to this partnership.

He commended Andre’s leadership and Erongo’s economic resilience.

“The Erongo region demonstrates ambition and pragmatism – two qualities that resonate deeply with us in the Western Cape,” he said.

He expressed keen interest in Erongo’s advancements in desalination, astro-tourism and the film industry, recognising their role in economic diversification.

Sustainability and climate change remain priorities.

Meyer praised Erongo’s green hydrogen and fertiliser initiatives, as well as its emphasis on youth participation in climate dialogues.

He noted strong alignment with the Western Cape’s sustainability programmes, such as the ‘One Home, One Garden’ initiative.

Economic growth is a shared objective, with Meyer identifying investment attraction, export growth and infrastructure development as essential pillars.

He highlighted Erongo’s leadership in green hydrogen and ammonia production, positioning it as a key player in the global energy transition.

The forthcoming cooperation agreement between the Western Cape and Erongo region will solidify these commitments, with officials finalising an actionable implementation plan.

Both leaders expressed confidence that this partnership will serve as a model for regional cooperation across Africa, fostering innovation and long-term sustainability.

The final step will be the official signing of the twinning agreement, with the date yet to be announced.
