Eswatini to head AU’s agriculture, blue economy

Eswatini to head AU’s agriculture, blue economy

The African Union (AU) Executive Council has concluded its proceedings, with representatives from six countries elected to the Council’s Commission. Eswatini has been elected as the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment. Nigeria will serve as the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, while Ghana will oversee Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development. South Africa has been chosen for the Commissioner of Infrastructure and Energy. However, South Africa’s candidate for the Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation commissioner position could not be appointed, despite having no contenders in the category. The country was disqualified for failing to meet gender equality requirements. Consequently, the current Commissioner from Algeria has been appointed to the position in an acting capacity until June.
The summit is also expected to elect the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the AU Commission. Voting will take place during the summit, which is scheduled for Saturday.
