Windhoek

Local fistballers met for the Bank Windhoek Fistball League for the first time at the revamped Cohen Fistball Club sports grounds, which saw heavyweights Cohen 1 and SKW 2 marching on in the title run in their respective divisions.

The event attracted more spectators than usual who enjoyed an exciting day of fistball, as CFC 2 came face to face with bitter rivals SKW 1 in the first match of the day in the National A division.

Surprisingly Cohen won the first set with a consistent display, taking advantage of the many unforced errors by their opponents. Imawida made some switches and gained a 2:1 lead and though the hosts nearly got a second set, they could not keep their momentum throughout. Eventually Imawida came out tops 5:1.

In the second encounter it was CFC 1 up against kid brother CFC 2 and the first team did not allow their understudies to find a way into the game, winning comfortably 5:0.

SKW 1 confronted CFC 1 in the last match. Cohen, with their strong attack, struck out a solid 11:2 in the first set.

SKW 1 pulled one set back to make it even but Cohen, not stunned at all, played a solid game from defence to attack to make the scoreline 3:1.

However, the Blue-Whites lost focus and committed mistakes at the back, allowing Imawida to find their way back into the contest to equalize 3:3. The hosts regained their focus and boldly defeated their opponents in the two sets thereafter to record their first ever home win in perfect style (5:3)

In other action, SKW 2 won all their games in the national league B and it was only in the match against titleholders CFC 3 that the Germans allowed their opponents to claim two sets after leading 3:0.

Against the Green-Whites, SFC only clinched one set but in their remaining two other games, the coastal outfit recorded victories against CFC 4 and DTS respectively.

DTS was the team whose performance improved markedly.

Fast improving DTS, finishing bottom last season is certainly developing into worthy opponents. The Olympia outfit forced CFC 3 to up their game clinching two sets from their much-fancied opponents.

In addition, they comfortably beat CFC 4, leaving last year’s runner-up to claim only one set in this particular round and are now rooted at the bottom of the log table.

The next fistball action, the Indoor Coastal Classics, takes place in Swakopmund, on the 14th of next month.
