Explosive fixtures in KBA semis

The Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) will enter the semi-final round this weekend, with the tie between Unam Rebels and Unam Wolves being the match to watch during the first round of the semis.

Matches will be played at the Unam Gym Hall in Windhoek. Four teams will contest for a place in the finals, namely log leaders Afro Stars, second-placed Unam Wolves, Unam Rebels, and Quality. The log leaders, Stars, will take on fourth-placed Quality, while Unam Wolves, who are second on the log, will lock horns against arch-rivals Unam Rebels in third place.

The finals are set to be played over a period of three to four weeks, with teams tussling it out in a best-of-seven series, and whoever wins four matches, will advance to the finals.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, marketing manager at the Khomas Basketball League, John Tjirimuje, said the expectations are high as the stakes are even higher this season. “I think it’s going to be a very tight contest, with all the teams well-prepared. But the match to watch will definitely be between Unam Wolves and Unam Rebels, a repeat of last year’s final. Wolves, as the defending champions, will be fighting to maintain their dominance, but Rebels will want revenge. It will be very interesting,” he said.

Afro Stars, who have had an impressive season, will also be hoping to make the finals after last year’s disappointment. “They have really turned their fortunes around after last year’s disappointment when they failed to reach the semis. This year, they’ve proven to be a force to reckon with. With the quality players they have, I believe they will be hungry to reach the finals,” he added.

Afro Stars star player, David Norman, said his side is prepared but not writing off their opponents. “We have a good team with quality players, and some of our key players are also returning, so we expect a good first semi-final. But all four teams are strong, and we anticipate exciting games. We are calling on basketball enthusiasts to come in numbers and support,” he said.
