A family of five was left destitute yesterday (Wednesday) morning after their homestead at Malundu, Kazinzila village in the Zambezi caught fire. Nothing was salvaged from the blaze. It is alleged Sumbwa Grace Kumoyo (34), a single parent, left her children in the courtyard at around 9h00 so that she could go and greet her neighbour but hardly five minutes later they noticed smoke and fire coming from her house.

“There were other kids playing around outside and we only heard them screaming that the  house was on fire. By the time we reached the courtyard the fire had already spread all over,” said one witness, Felix Pembe. All they could do was watch helplessly the house burned down.

Pembe suspects the children played with fire and inadvertently set the house on fire. The blaze reduced to ashes their personal documents and their harvest, which was their only means of surviving the current drought until the next rain season.

Kumoyo is appealing to any Good Samaritans to assist her in whichever way they can, as her relatives cannot assist her with all the basic necessities. Those willing to render assistance can contact the victim’s family member, Sam Limbo, on mobile number 081-2600743.
