Father ‘administers’ deadly concoction

RUNDU – The police in the Kavango West have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly attempting to kill his 11-month-old baby boy at Sikondo village on Sunday.

The suspect, who now faces a charge of attempted murder, read with the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, is the biological father of the victim, who is said to have been hospitalised.  The victim is reportedly in a stable condition. “The suspect gave his baby boy a concoction of solutions to drink with intent to kill the child. He mixed medicines, Betadine solution and Gentian violet solution,” said Kavango West regional commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo, when confirming the case to New Era.

“The cause is family issues. The victim is an 11-month-old baby boy, and the suspect, who is the biological father of the victim, is a Namibian residing at Sikondo village, and he is arrested,’’ she said.

In other news, a woman was reported to have burnt to death after lightning struck her hut where she was sleeping on Wednesday at around 04h00 at Nkonke village in Kavango West.

It was confirmed that at the time of the incident, the deceased was sleeping in a hut with three other roommates. The hut caught fire and started burning; three survivors escaped from the hut. One of them was burnt on her back.

“The deceased was identified as Johanna Nzawo Haita, a Namibian female adult, a resident of Matava village, Kavango West. The deceased’s remains were transported to the Nkurenkuru police mortuary pending autopsy, but the deceased’s next of kin have been informed,’’ Sakuwa-Neo said.
