Windhoek

The Bank Windhoek national fistball championship moves into a decisive phase at the SKW fistball fields on Saturday.

Teams from the National A and B leagues will jostle for positions on the log standings going into the play-off in September, with Saturday’s matches to determine the first qualifiers for the championship final.

The leader after the weekend automatically qualifies for the final, while the 2nd and 3rd placed teams will contest the semi-final in September to determine the 2nd finalist.

Cohen FC 1 are currently in 1st spot in the National A league log standings and will want to defend this position on Saturday, but could face some tough competition as they confront defending champions SKW 1, perched in 2nd spot with the same number of points. Cohen will also face 3rd placed SKW 2.

Imawida (SKW) 1 will be a force to be reckoned with and go into the match with a full strength side with national team players, Gernot Helm in attack and Stephan Zimny in defence.

All-rounder and former Swiss first league player, Stefan Grögl, is also available for selection and will give the team some much-needed experience in both attack and defense. Cohen FC 1 on the other hand, can rely on national team spiker, Tristan Minz, who has shown good form in the national teams practice sessions of late.

Cohen FC 3 is well poised to retain 1st position in the B League. The team from Olympia sits 7-points clear of 2nd placed SFC 2, and are virtually assured of a top three finish. The national cup winners will meet DTS, SFC 2 and 3rd placed Cohen FC 4 in what promises to be an action-packed day.

Defending champions SKW 3 will be out to do some damage control after a somewhat wayward season thus far that has seen them getting the wooden spoon in National B league log standings.

Action starts at 08h30, with the last matches expected to finish at 18h00. A prize-giving ceremony will be held at the Cohen FC clubhouse from 19h00 where the Player of the Day will be announced.
