WINDHOEK – The Namibian fistball season is set to start this weekend with the season’s opening tournament in the Bank Windhoek Fistball League taking place on Saturday at the SKW fistball fields in Windhoek.
The opening tournament also marks the start of the national team players’ preparation for the 2015 men’s World Cup, which takes place in Argentina from November 15 to 22. Bank Windhoek will once again be the official sponsor of the fistball league.
The games will be played in two categories. The top class, Category A, will feature five teams, of which two each are from Cohen FC and SKW and one from the Swakopmund-based SFC Sport Club. SKW 1 has been touted as the favourite for this year’s competition.
The defending league champions have a wealth of experience in their line-up, but they can expect a tough challenge from Cohen FC1. The team ended last season on a high by winning the Bank Windhoek National Cup. With Vigo von Scheliha and Tristan Minz in attack, they are set to repeat the upset.
Teams from SKW, CFC and SFC will contest Category B. Cohen FC 3 will be back this season with something to prove after ending in a surprising second place in last year’s Bank Windhoek National B League Competition.
The Windhoek-based team will want to reassert their dominance in the lower division, where they had a three-year winning streak. SKW 3 might struggle in this year’s competition, since they have lost some of their most promising players through promotion to the first division teams.
