KATIMA MULILO – Five people died while three survived a lightning strike in two separate incidents on Tuesday in the Zambezi region. This happened after a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning struck the region, causing damage to properties and uprooting trees.

According to Zambezi Police spokesperson Kisco Sitali, the first incident happened at Makaravani West compound in Katima Mulilo after lightning struck seven people who were gathered at an informal market under a tree around 17h00.

“Upon the police’s arrival, they only found four people. Three were rushed to Katima Mulilo state hospital, and have since been discharged and are in a stable condition while one died on the spot,” said Sitali.

The three survivors have been identified as Shipaku Selma (29), Beatrice Saka (13), and Vasco Vasele (40). The deceased has thus far only been identified as Brenda.

Sitali further added that upon inspection, it was discovered that there were three other people who were part of the group and had been removed from the scene by their family members and taken to a traditional doctor before the police arrived at the scene.

“All three died in the eyes of the traditional doctor who was trying to assist them,” Sitali confirmed.

They have been identified as Lukaemela Antonio (35), Zesse Antonio (14), and Angelina Rundes (14).

In a separate incident, a Zambian national was struck by lightning at Isize in Kabbe North constituency and died on the spot. Her body was transported to Katima Mulilo hospital, stated Sitali.

She has been identified as Patricia Namatama Nanyana. The next of kin in all incidents have been informed.
