ONGWEDIVA – Be warned! Reckless drivers this festive season will face the full wrath of the law as the Namibian Police (NamPol) traffic unit has acquired a new fleet of Toyota bakkies and Corollas to fight the scourge.
“Most of the traffic units country-wide were given two additional vehicles to assist with the current fleet they are having. However the distribution is based on the needs on the ground.
“Areas where the constant use of gravel roads are high, received bakkies while places such as the coast received sedans,” said Ralph Ludwig, Deputy Commissioner in charge of NamPol’s Traffic unit under Namibian Police.
As for the northern part of the country, Oshakati and Ongwediva residents have noticed the increased traffic law enforcement activities by police using the brand new vehicles. The traffic unit vehicles are observed at traffic lights, where police book those that skip the red traffic lights, and other places along the highway.
“Apart from being in the air with the police helicopter and making visual assessments of situations, we will be visible on the roads this festive season and will do highway patrols, coupled with speed law enforcements.
“Vehicles (not roadworthy) will be removed from the road and owners will be asked to fix their cars and make them safe to drive on our roads,” said Ludwig.
