The 2025 edition of the FNB Classic Clashes was launched in stirring fashion as MK Gertze High School hosted Dr Lemmer High for the season’s first rugby match in Rehoboth.

The match, played at the MK Gertze rugby field on 16 July, and charged with school pride and community spirit, marked the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season of youth sports across Namibia.

The Classic Clashes have grown from more than just inter-school competitions to a national tradition. With every match, schools across the country compete not only for victory on the field, but also for the honour of representing their schools, their values, and their resilience.

FNB Namibia, the title sponsor, has played a crucial role in nurturing this platform. The bank’s long-standing investment in school sports speaks to its belief in the transformative power of athletics in shaping young lives.

At the opening match, FNB Rehoboth branch manager Jonathan Coakley highlighted the deeper purpose behind the games:

“The FNB Classic Clashes are more than just a sporting fixture. They are a platform where school pride, athletic talent, and the spirit of unity come alive.”

This year’s clashes span multiple disciplines including rugby, soccer, netball and basketball, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for sport among Namibian youth.

Next on the fixtures list, attention shifts to Erongo region. On 22 July, Kolen Foundation defeated West Side High 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Arandis Sports Stadium. Yesterday, Coastal High School was set to face Swakopmund Secondary School at the Vineta Sports Stadium.

FNB Namibia has urged all Namibians, especially parents, educators, and peers to rally behind the players. With each match, the Classic Clashes continue to write a powerful story of talent, determination, and community pride. -hilmanalupe@gmail.com
