Former Chief of Housing and Properties at the City of Windhoek, Lazarus Shaduka, arrested over the weekend in connection with the alleged murder of his wife Selma Shaimemanya, made his first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Thirty-eight-year-old Shaduka, who faces a charge of murder, briefly appeared before Windhoek magistrate, Elsie Schickerling, and his case was remanded to tomorrow pending further police investigations as well as to enable him to lodge a formal bail application.
He was remanded in custody at Windhoek Police Station’s holding cells.
Local lawyer, Titus Ipumbu, of Ipumbu & Muluti Legal Practitioners, represented Shaduka.
Public Prosecutor Linus Samaria appeared for the State.
Police and media reports had it that the 33-year-old Shaimemanya, who was the secretary of Defence Minister, Charles Namoloh, was allegedly murdered at her home in Windhoek’s Klein Windhoek residential area on Sunday night.
Reports allege that Shaimemanya died from a gunshot wound to the back of her neck, shortly after her husband rushed her to the Paramount Clinic in Eros at around 20h30.
It was also reported that Shaduka initially claimed that Shaimemanya had committed suicide.
Shaimemanya left two children, one still a baby, reports said yesterday.
Shaduka hit the headlines three years ago when he resigned from his position at the City of Windhoek in August 2005 after it became public knowledge that he had allegedly acquired plots in various parts of the City of Windhoek by using names of relatives and that he had allegedly failed to disclose to the municipality that he was the real owner of the plots.
He resigned a month after he was suspended.
However, the City of Windhoek refused to accept his resignation and fired him instead. – Nampa
