Futsal fever hits Windhoek

Futsal fever hits Windhoek

Today marks an electrifying day for futsal fans in Windhoek, as the Futsal Namibia Premier League officially kicks off at DTS indoor court in Olympia.

Since its inception in 2020, with a humble roster of just 30 to 40 players, the league has rapidly evolved, fuelled by an exciting N$450 000 sponsorship from the Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC).

This year promises to be bigger and better, not only featuring the premier league but also the first division, paving the way for more competitive action on the court.

Media officer for the leagues Greyeno Rusberg said preparations for the season have been running smoothly.

“The futsal referee workshop took place yesterday, giving everyone a much-needed refresher before the league kicks off. The positive news is that futsal is pushing towards full professionalism under the Namibia Football Association, with 11 registered teams this season,” he stated.

With NDTC’s backing, the league is set to elevate its branding and ensure a uniform dress code for all teams, bringing a sense of professionalism that reflects the sport’s growing popularity.

“These are exciting times for futsal in Namibia. The league will commence with the premier league and first division teams, while other divisions will join later. The momentum is palpable, as the sport is expanding at a rapid pace,” he added.

Defending champions Quality Football Club (FC), under the guidance of interim coach Jose Cazola, are eager to showcase their readiness for the season. “Our preparations have been intense, and we believe the results will reflect how prepared we are. This motivates not only the organisers but also the coaches and players. We see the game growing with increased passion and energy,” he remarked.

He emphasised the importance of trying out different sports, stating: “There’s a different sport for everyone. If you don’t try, you won’t know what you like”.

Meanwhile, Julinho Athletic FC’s head coach Julinho Gariseb expressed excitement about the upcoming matches despite initial delays due to administrative issues.

“We’ve been preparing for about five to six months for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead.

“Although futsal isn’t yet a household name, it’s gaining traction. People are turning up to keep the spirit of the game alive. Our biggest priority is to compete at a high level. We respect our opponents, and while it will be a challenging season, we will take it one match at a time,” he said.

With all teams eager to prove their mettle and showcase their skills, the stage is set for an unforgettable season of futsal in Namibia.

Fans can expect thrilling matches, passionate displays of talent and a growing community around this dynamic sport.

Let the games begin!
