Namibia is set to face Libya in round two of the 2026 CAF Futsal Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the second leg kicking off today at 19h00 at the Dome in Swakopmund, followed by the return leg on 8 February.
The upcoming fixtures promise to be a stern test for the Namibian side as they seek to build on their momentum from the initial qualifying round.
Head coach Marcos Antunes emphasised that the team’s ambition remains unchanged: to play to win.
“The second qualifier will be more challenging. We need to consider the rankings of the two sides. Libya is ranked 50th in the world, while Namibia sits at 137th. That difference might seem like nothing, but it reflects Libya’s extensive experience in international futsal over the past years. They have played many international games, which gives them an edge,” he said.
Despite the apparent ranking gap, Antunes remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete.
“We are approaching this strategically. We will develop specific game plans to create challenges for Libya. When I arrived here, I said my goal was to prepare the team to win. What these players achieved in the first two games was remarkable. In Namibia’s last five international games, they lost three and won two. Our objective is to continue that upward trajectory, playing with organisation, passion, and a clear focus, while always keeping our feet on the ground. We aim to defend and honour the Namibian flag with every performance,” said Antunes.
Antunes also stressed the importance of proper preparation and investment in the sport.
“The budget is crucial. With the right financial resources, we can prepare optimally. The training conditions must be optimal to ensure a strong response against a team like Libya. I have been here for three weeks, and I am encouraged by the growing interest in futsal in Namibia,” he said.
“The team is developing well, but there needs to be continuity. We need more international matches, more qualified coaches, and directors to develop youth players. FIFA and CAF coaching courses are essential to support the growth of futsal nationally,” he added.
The coach also highlighted the significance of fan support.
“We have won some matches, but our promise is to give our best results, especially at home. The presence of supporters is key, as it gives visibility to futsal and motivates our players. The warmth and positive words from Namibians have been very encouraging, and it is a pleasure to be here with the team,” Antunes added.
