With less than 10 days left before the 2025 Futsal Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) takes centre-stage, Namibia’s team has intensified its training as they prepare for a crucial match-up against the host nation.
Namibia is in Group A, together with host nation Morocco and Cameroon, in what is considered a tough group at this year’s tournament. This will also be the first time the Gladiators 5 compete at this tournament, as it was inaugurated this year.
On Tuesday this week, the Brave Gladiators 5 team played a friendly match against a selection team from the Ligue du Grand Casablanca, Morocco. The match served as preparation for their opening match on Monday next week against the host nation. Namibia won the friendly with a score of 4-3.
In a recent interview, the head coach of the team Donaldwad Modise was upbeat that they could cause an upset against a strong side such as Morocco. “I have faith in the team, and I trust them wholeheartedly. I believe with the necessary support and guidance, we are very much capable of doing the unthinkable,” he said.
This will be the first time the tournament is being held. It will run from 22 to 30 April, with the winners booking a spot at the World Cup, which will be hosted later this year in the Philippines.
Also throwing weight behind the team, the team’s assistant coach Cheila Nunda said the team is ready, and they have done everything possible to get them into the next round.
“I played Futsal before I became a coach. I have seen how most of these players have transitioned into better Futsal players, and with that, I can assure you that the team is well-balanced, and we are capable of producing the results we need and getting the team to the World Cup,” she enthused.
The Namibia Futsal Gladiators will be making their debut in the competition, marking a significant milestone for women’s Futsal in the country. This follows the participation of the Brave 5, Namibia’s men’s Futsal team, in their first Futsal Afcon tournament in April 2024, also held in Rabat, Morocco.
