KARASBURG – The Namibia Football Association (NFA) Galz & Goals programme continues to grow and will this week move to Karasburg with the main event taking place on Saturday, followed by a week-long training for football coaches and in living a healthy lifestyle.

Karasburg is one of the local communities that expressed the hope to become part of the popular football league for girls aged 10-17. Sport officer in Karasburg, Elina Petrus, took the initiative to pilot the league in the town last year.

The Galz & Goals Pilot League in Karasburg proved a huge success, demonstrating that the community was ready to welcome the NFA and its partners UNICEF, SPAR, SCORE and UNAIDS for the official launch of the Galz & Goals programme, said Jacqueline Gertze, the national coordinator of the NFA Galz & Goals project.

The programme will be launched with a Football and Healthy Lifestyle Festival for all girls aged 10-15 on May 17 at the town’s high school sports field. The event will feature a seven-a-side tourney and health booths with fun and educational activities including information for the girls and the public, as well as the Protect the Goal competitions with UNAIDS and SCORE.

“We want to revamp football in Karasburg as women’s football is non-existent. Galz & Goals keeps the girls busy as there are not many healthy activities for them to engage in, and both kids and parents are very happy with the programme,” said Petrus.

NFA Galz & Goals offers a football league for girls’ U/13 and U/15 and added the U/17 teams where HIV/AIDS education and healthy lifestyle components have been integrated.
