WINDHOEK – President Hage Geingob yesterday held bilateral meetings with presidents of Cuba, Comoros, Estonia and the chairperson of the African Union Commission.
Geingob held the key bilateral talks on the margins of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In talks with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, President Geingob committed to deepen the brotherhood and existing cooperation between the two nations, rooted in a strong foundation of solidarity.
The president agreed and emphasised the need to implement decisions taken but not yet delivered, including the establishment of a pharmaceutical plant in Namibia, and to explore other areas of economic cooperation.
The Namibian head of state also briefed Diaz-Canel on next week’s national land conference and highlighted the importance of continuity in succession and preserving the legacy of the founding fathers of Cuba and Namibia, according to a statement by Geingob’s spokesperson Dr Alfredo Hengari.
President Diaz-Canel confirmed receipt of Namibia’s invitation to the land conference and confirmed that an agrarian land expert from the Caribbean island nation has been delegated to attend the conference in Windhoek.
President Geingob and Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Estonia, discussed the urgency of reform of the United Nations Security Council to reflect the changing international system.
President Geingob lauded cooperation between the two countries in e-governance and harnessing technology for development.
The two leaders discussed challenges and opportunities facing small states, and the need for the two countries to accelerate investment and business exchanges.
President Kaljulaid said a business delegation from Estonia would travel to Namibia to explore opportunities in the immediate future.
Geingob, the hairperson of SADC, also held talks with the President of the Union of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, to discuss the integration of the country into SADC, including forthcoming elections to be held in that country in 2019.
President Geingob sais as chairperson of the regional bloc, and in consultation with fellow leaders, he would steer the work-plan of the organisation.
Geingob concluded high-level consultations at UN General Assembly with a meeting with the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The meeting focused on the forthcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo and developments in SADC.
President Geingob emphasised consultation and inclusive decision-making about development, peace and security challenges facing the African continent.
He addressed investors and business leaders at the Invest in Namibia Conference yesterday.
“The President assured existing and potential investors that Namibia was an excellent investment proposition with robust governance architecture, anchored on transparency and accountability,” said Alfredo Hengari.
