Getting hooked on Kala Crochet designs

Wilhemina Iimene’s Kala Crochet summer/spring vibes designs made a splash at the MTC Windhoek Fashion Week, and she was blown away by the experience.

The young part-time crochetier said her maiden fashion week appearance, as designer, was an inspiration, having to witness what other designers have made.

“I’ve realised there is great talent in Namibia – and shows like MTC Windhoek Fashion Show are needed; it should even be maybe twice a year because there’s a lot of potential in the fashion design industry,” said Iimene.

She participated in the 2020 Fashion Pitch Night and won second prize.

Iimene, who dabbles in writing, further told VIBEZ! she has learned about hard work. Looking at what she has created is a recognisable brand, and it’s starting to see some success.

“I kept it simple because simplicity is really not that simple. It gives detail to clothing because it becomes a centre of attention; it’s simple. There’s nowhere else to look,” she said.

Her designs are relatable to a wide array of people of all ages, which make them a possible financial success.

The English student at the University of Science and Technology got hooked in 2019 when – out of curiosity – she started crocheting just to pass time.

Her brand ‘Kala Crochet’ was founded shortly thereafter.

Two of the models, Iuze Limbo (18) and Agness Smith (22), who wore the Kala Crochet vibes outfits at this year’s fashion week, described them as comfortable and soft, something they would wear to the beach or fit in their daily wardrobe.

“I really love the Kala Crochet outfits. It was very confident and comfortable in a way that I felt positive about my body,” said Limbo.

Limbo added the designs are a definite self-confidence boost – and with no doubt, spending time in the outfits was a good way to highlight the hours spent at the event.
