Gibeon, Windhoek eager to continue cooperation

Councillors of the Gibeon village in the Hardap region paid a working visit to the City of Windhoek.

Speaking during a joint media briefing, Windhoek’s deputy mayor Clemencia Hanases noted that no city, town or village can today exist in isolation as they continuously need to interact and share experiences and resources to advance common goals.

“The City of Windhoek and the Gibeon Village Council have signed an agreement of cooperation in 2003,
which was renewed in 2017. It covers areas of capacity building, town planning, waste management, financial systems and councillor exchanges,” explained Hanases.

She noted that the two institutions have made progress in implementing that agreement.

“The City of Windhoek is really willing to assist the Gibeon Village Council in whatever way we can,” she reiterated.

The chairperson of the Gibeon Village Council, Sharon Bezuidenhoudt, said her council needs the city’s assistance in keeping the village clean, and to restore its historic prestige.

Bezuidenhoudt added that Gibeon is committed to renewing the agreement between the institutions before it lapses in October 2021.

“My village council is facing many challenges, like a shortage of clinics, shops, a police station and proper
roads. The clinic in Gibeon is also without doctors,” she stated.

Bezuidenhout said her village is dirty, and has become unhygienic for the community.

Gibeon is a historical town, and its cleanliness will benefit many people in society, especially the local business people, she added.
