A 34-year-old woman – who appeared before the Shambyu traditional court over allegations she stole goat meat – committed suicide by hanging herself with an electric wire in her room hours after she was arraigned for the alleged theft.

The incident occurred at Katimba in Mashare Constituency in Kavango East. According to sources, no suicide note was left behind by the deceased.

“It was alleged before the deceased committed suicide that there was a report the deceased was caught with stolen goat meat, for which she was tried traditionally earlier on the same day, Sunday 23 August. This could have been the motive behind the suicide,” Detective Chief Inspector, Chrispin Mubebo of the police in Kavango East Region confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as Karenga Agnes Kafuti, 34, from Katimba village. Her body has since been transported to the mortuary at Rundu State Hospital. Close family members could not be reached for comment and the Shambyu traditional court, where she appeared was also unavailable to provide more details.
