Governor: Covid non-adherence a challenge

Khomas governor Laura Mcleod-Katjirua says the region will work with stakeholders to ensure adherence to Covid-19 public health regulations.

Despite sharply rising new Covid-19 infections, some Windhoek residents have blatantly defied curfew orders, while alcohol continues to flow freely.

Government a fortnight ago imposed a partial lockdown, restricting travel between regional zones and banning the sale of alcohol from Friday to Sunday.

In a statement yesterday, Mcleod-Katjirua admitted the region is encountering various challenges of non-adherence among residents to Covid-19 prevention protocols.

“Other challenges are that of the business non-adherence to Covid-19 protocols, over-whelmed testing sites, and over-stretched human resources for health (increasing shortage of healthcare workers), increasing demand for bed admission capacity both in private and public health facilities and serious demand in the state mortuary for more space to store bodies,” she indicated.

McLeod-Katjirua also said the region will work with stakeholders to dispel misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines.

“The region will continue to identify more sites for vaccination to more populous areas of Windhoek,” she said.

Khomas remains the epicentre of the coronavirus in the country, with nearly 700 people succumbing to the virus in the region. Meanwhile, the country has surpassed the 2 000-mark when it comes to Covid-19 deaths.

Total deaths due to the pandemic in the country now stand at 2 019 and 106 879 cumulative confirmed cases.

The recovery rate stands at 74%.
