Information minister Emma Theofelus announced on Tuesday that the government has committed N$40 million to expand information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in Namibia.
The investment aims to support and complement the efforts of existing mobile network operators, reinforcing the country’s digital transformation agenda.
Theofelus made the announcement during the Huawei Namibia and Pinnacle gala dinner at the Windhoek Country Club.
“This investment highlights our commitment to bridging the digital divide and strengthening Namibia’s digital economy. While we are not hosting the annual ICT Summit this year, we are actively working on strategic projects that will yield long-term benefits for the sector,” she said.
The minister noted that Namibia is on a determined path towards digital transformation, in line with its broader development goals.
“Guided by our national development frameworks, including Vision 2030 and the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), the government has prioritised ICT development as a fundamental enabler of economic growth, social inclusion and national competitiveness,” she added.
Last year, the ministry signed the Namibia LEAP Digital Talent Programme 2024 agreement with Huawei Technologies Namibia in Shenzhen, China.
The programme focuses on building digital skills and empowering Namibian youth with confidence, and exposure needed to succeed in the global digital economy.
“What does this partnership entail? Through this collaboration, we will cultivate local ICT talent, create internship opportunities for students, and lay the foundation for a new generation of innovators, developers and problem-solvers who will drive Namibia’s digital transformation,” said Theofelus.
