Windhoek

Nedbank Namibia last Sunday hosted the first edition of the Nedbank Citi Run, a marathon that wound its way through Windhoek.

Windhoek Harriers running club assisted with the logistical arrangements to ensure runners enjoyed a safe and pleasurable race.

The event was well attended with staff from Nedbank Namibia participating together with other entrants.

The race kicked off early in the day, starting and finishing in front of Zoo Park in Independence Avenue.
Approximately 500 athletes competed in running distances of 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 10 km, as well as walking distances of 10 km and 5 km.

Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Lionel Matthews, the managing director of Nedbank Namibia, said the bank was very proud to host a road running event with the assistance of Windhoek Harriers.

“In the coming years, we will aspire to bring Namibia a marathon event that can rival the prestige of the Nedbank Comrades Ultra Marathon,” he added.

Eliphas Shuuya took first place in the 42.2 km senior category – clocking a time of 02 34 35.36 to beat Martin Ntinda on 02 35 49.88. Pinehas Embashu finished 3rd with a time of 02 39 17.71.

Top finisher in the 21.1 km category was Samy Tum in a time of 01 09 27.68, with veteran runner Frans Hosea adrift in 2nd place clocking 01 11 13.60.
