The Green team emerged victorious at Epukiro Secondary School’s inter-house athletics competition held on Friday at the school’s sports grounds.
The event, which featured teams in Green, Yellow and Red, serves as a platform to identify top athletes to represent the school in Zonal games and other major sporting events in the Omaheke region.
Athletes in the U/19 category competed in a range of track events, including the 100 metres (m), 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m, while in-field events included javelin, shot put, discus, long jump and high jump.
The Green team claimed the top spot with 730 points, narrowly edging out the Red, which finished second with 700 points. The Yellow secured third place with 340 points.
Some of the standout performers included Ngaitjitue Katjiuanjo from the Yellow team, who won the U/19 girls’ javelin, and Tjiunatjo Kahorere, who clocked an impressive 0.31 seconds to win the U/17 girls’ 200m sprint. On the boys’ side, Uajakongero Mbazuvara led the U/19 category with a time of 25.96 seconds in the 200m sprint.
Eerike Kamberipa, the school’s sports officer, expressed excitement at Green team’s victory, as they were considered underdogs going into the competition. “Their win shows the power of perseverance. Despite some fitness challenges, the athletes gave their all,” he said.
Kamberipa also revealed that 40 athletes had been selected to represent Epukiro SS at the upcoming Zonal games. “We’ll be working hard to prepare them for the big competition,” he added.
The Zonal games are scheduled for 14 March at Eiseb Primary School in Otjombinde.
