Guard killed in hippo attack

KATIMA MULILO — A 51-year-old security guard was found dead early Saturday morning at the Protea Hotel in Katima Mulilo, in what police believe may have been a hippopotamus
attack.

According to the Namibian Police, the body of the deceased, identified as Lukonga Munalisa Chawila, was discovered lying on the ground at around 06h00 with severe injuries to the stomach and leg.

Zambezi police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Kisco Sitali, who confirmed the incident, said an inquest has been registered.

“It is alleged that the man was last seen alive at around 05h00 in the guarding room with a co-worker. Shortly after he left, he was later found dead. Track marks believed to be from a hippo were clearly visible at the scene,” Sitali said. Police investigations are ongoing, but preliminary observations suggest that Chawila may have been attacked by a hippo while on duty near the hotel grounds along the riverbank.

The body was transported to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital mortuary, and next of kin have been informed, Sitali added.

Authorities have cautioned residents and workers along the Zambezi River to exercise extra vigilance, especially during early morning and late-night hours, as hippos are known to roam onto land during these times.
