Home Crime and Courts Guards arrested for N$300 000 bank theft

Rundu

Three security officers employed by Mpungu Security Company in Rundu will be brought before court today for the alleged theft of N$300 000 meant for restocking First National Bank’s automatic teller machines (ATMs) at Rundu.

On Saturday at around 10h00, the three security officers received a huge sum of money from FNB in Rundu to restock the ATMs.

However, the two bags in which the N$300 000 was being transported ‘vanished’ and the three security officers could not give any satisfactory explanation as to how the money went missing. The three were subsequently arrested on Saturday and are scheduled to appear before court today.

According to police detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, none of the stolen cash has been recovered yet, but he said investigations are in progress.

“That security company is hired by FNB to transport money to ATMs in town. At the moment we don’t have much to say, as we are still investigating, but if anybody has any information regarding this they are more than welcome to approach our office,” Mubebo said.

In April last year FNB Rundu experienced a similar crime wherein two security officers from the same security company were implicated. At the time the guards stole over N$1.8 million.

The police recovered N$1.05 million, but the rest of the loot was never recovered.
The two guards, who were suspects in the matter, claimed they were robbed of over N$1.8 million, destined for FNB ATMs at the town.

The two guards said they were robbed in Rundu’s Galaxy Mall by an unidentified man, whom the police later identified as their accomplice.

FNB Rundu branch seems prone to insider theft, as two of its employees were also arrested last year for the theft of N$2 million.
