South African multiple award-winning acoustics guitarist, Tony Cox, is on his way to Windhoek to present a dazzling performance. Toni Cox is well known from numerous performances over the past ten years in Windhoek as the ‘other half’ of the Toni Cox and Steve Newman duo, with their fascinating and popular guitar cocktails. Cox returned three months ago from a major tour of the U.K. and Germany where his music made such an impact that he was invited back for several festivals in the summer of 2007, a Down Town Music Entertainment press release stated. The music of this steel-string guitar guru can be classified as Cape Town folk. It has a feel of jazz, blues and Cape Town ‘goema’. Tony Cox gained much popularity with his albums ‘Matabele Ants’ and ‘China’. On ‘China’, Tony features several renowned South African artists such as Louis Mhlanga, George Phiri, Steve Newman, Johnny Fourie, Sibusiso Victor Mason. Cox’s latest DVD/CD release, recorded live at the Grahamstown National Festival of the Arts, was recently nominated in the best instrumental category at the South African Music Awards (SAMA 12). This was his fifth nomination with two wins for ‘Matabele Ants’ in 2001 and ‘China’ in 2003.
