Haitope storms to Two Oceans Half Marathon glory

Namibian long-distance runner Lavinia Haitope delivered a commanding performance to clinch the 2026 Two Oceans Marathon half marathon title, underlining her status as one of Africa’s elite distance athletes.

Haitope powered through the challenging 21.1 kilometre (km) course in an impressive time of 1:14:36, navigating the race’s demanding hills with composure and strength. Her dominant run saw her cross the finish line nearly two minutes ahead of her closest challenger on a crisp morning in Cape Town.

Reflecting on her victory, Haitope acknowledged the difficulty of the course but credited her determination for the win. “It was a tough race. I am glad to have won. There were many hills, but I pushed through,” she said.

Zimbabwe’s Fortunate Chidzivo secured second place in a time of 1:16:29, while South Africa’s Emma Browne rounded out the podium in 1:18:09.

While Haitope dominated the half marathon, the prestigious 56km ultra marathon, often regarded as the main event of the Two Oceans spectacle, also produced thrilling performances.

In the women’s ultra race, South Africa’s Gerda Steyn once again proved her class in the women’s category, continuing her remarkable dominance in the race with another memorable victory in a time of 3:27:43, securing her seventh consecutive title.

Margaret Jepchumba of Kenya took second place (3:33:31), and Zimbabwe’s Nobuhle Nobukhosi Tshuma finished in third (3:38:34).

On the men’s side, top contenders battled fiercely across the scenic but punishing route, which stretches along the Cape Peninsula and is famed for its breathtaking views and gruelling climbs.

South African runner Arthur Jantjies won the men’s ultra-marathon in a time of 3:09:25. He was followed by fellow South African Onalenna Khonkhobe (3:10:00) in second and Zimbabwean Blessing Waison (3:11:13) in third.

The ultramarathon remains one of the most iconic races on the global running calendar, attracting elite athletes and social runners from around the world, all eager to test their endurance on one of the most beautiful courses in the sport.

Haitope’s triumph not only adds another accolade to her growing list of achievements but also reinforces Namibia’s presence on the international road running stage.

Her performance in Cape Town signals strong form and positions her as a key athlete to watch in upcoming continental and global competitions.
