Namibian long-distance runner Lavinia Haitope continued her impressive run of form with yet another major victory after claiming gold at the World Athletics Cross Country Tour (Bronze Label) event held in Botswana on Saturday.
Haitope dominated the women’s 10-kilometre race, crossing the finish line in a winning time of 36:03, underlining her growing stature on the regional and continental athletics scene.
Botswana’s Gaone Batheong settled for second place in 37:08, while Melody Kaseke of Zimbabwe completed the podium in third with a time of 37:30.
The victory adds to Haitope’s recent string of strong performances and wins on the road and cross-country circuit, further cementing her status as one of Namibia’s most consistent and reliable long-distance athletes.
Her latest success also highlights her ability to perform under pressure against quality international opposition.
Reflecting on the race, Haitope described the experience as special and deeply rewarding. “It went really well, and I am thrilled to have won the gold medal at the Botswana International Cross Country. I feel over the moon and very proud of my performance. It was such an exciting experience, and I am grateful for all the hard work that led to this moment,” said Haitope.
She also emphasised the pride of competing for her country and club on an international stage.
“I am especially proud to represent my country, Namibia, and my club, NamPol, at such a big event. Moments like these make all the sacrifices worthwhile,” Haitope added.
Namibia was also represented in the men’s race, where Enock Haufiku delivered a solid performance to finish 10th overall. The men’s 10km race was won by Botswana’s Karabo Bosele in 31:31, followed closely by Badboy Toka in 31:43, while Sesebo Matlapeng claimed third place.
