Hamukwaya happy with athletes’ performance

Secretary general of the Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC), Michael Hamukwaya says he is happy with athletes’ performance at the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region Five Youth Games underway in Swakopmund.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday at the end of day two of the athletics competitions, Hamukwaya said it has been an amazing competition since day one, despite the challenging weather.

“In the beginning, it was a bit cold. But as the day goes, it seems like Swakop really became a bit welcoming and the weather changed, and then the competition started,” he said.

He added that the young athletes competing at this year’s championship are eager to give their best for their countries as well as take this opportunity to showcase their talent.

“I believe they are taking it very, very seriously. And from the Para side, as we said, the first day was basically qualifying, moving to different stages of the competition. But the second day, as we are talking, our para-athletes have won us two gold medals and another silver medal in the bag. So, it’s a good start for the day today. We are waiting for tomorrow’s 400 metres,” said Hamukwaya.

The SG added that the Paralympic team consists of six athletes; one female and five males, but they are hopeful the athletes will win many medals for their country.

“Initially, as at the beginning, we had 20 athletes, but only six athletes made it through to the classification. But we are excited, and we are really happy to see that our Paralympic athletes are still maintaining the medal table and still putting Team Namibia at the top of the medal tally,” he stated.

The AUSC Region 5 Games are taking place in Windhoek and Swakopmund from 04 to 13 July 2025, with athletes competing in athletics, swimming, karate, judo, football, volleyball, boxing, table tennis, tennis, basketball, netball, and e-sports.  -Nampa
