MARIENTAL – The Malaysian High Commission, in collaboration with the Namibian Correctional Services and the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) alumni in Namibia, inaugurated a poultry project at the Hardap Correctional Facility on Thursday.
The project is expected to provide inmates with constructive activities to get involved in, as well as vocational training.
“We provided funds for building materials for the barn, as well as 200 chickens,” Malaysia’s acting high commissioner to Namibia, Dato’ Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, said in an interview with Nampa.
Deputy commissioner general of the Namibian Correctional Service, Sam Shaalulange, emphasised the project’s impact during his welcoming remarks.
“This chicken barn will engage inmates in constructive activities. They will learn skills they will need after their release into society, and the project will provide chicken meat and eggs for consumption, enhancing their diet,” he said. Shali Kapepo, president of the MTCP Alumni in Namibia, thanked the Hardap Correctional Facility for accepting the donation.
“This initiative will not only enhance their daily lives, but empower them with practical knowledge in poultry farming, which can be sustainable source of livelihood,” Kapepo said.
