Haukongo aims for the top

Haukongo aims for the top

Hedula Haukongo, a rising talent on the music scene, is causing a stir with his latest multi-lingual track titled ‘ HOU OP’ that’s gaining popularity in South Africa, where he’s currently studying.

Born into a family with a mixed heritage and experiencing various neighbourhoods in Windhoek helped mould his passion for music.

His musical journey began with piano and drumming lessons during his primary school years at Windhoek’s Waldorf, and continued through his high school tenure at St. George’s Diocesan College.

“During high school, I started rapping more, writing and performing new
songs at various school events.
Throughout high school, I also enjoyed playing sports (mainly athletics and
chess), and was involved in leadership
positions at my school, where I was part of the SRC and became the head boy in my matric year. I’ve always loved rap music growing
up, and started rapping so that I could inspire others, as well as share a message with every song I make,” he said.

His latest single, which features verses in Afrikaans, German and English, reflects his linguistic versatility and cultural heritage.

“It started off with a friend and I casually freestyling in Afrikaans to a beat. I decided to experiment with rapping in different languages,
choosing the three that I speak fluently,” said the musician.

He said he wrote the lyrics of the song, and used a free-for-profit beat that he found on YouTube as the instrumental, and recorded the song at DJ Chronic’s studio. Friends and family also helped with the promotion and release of it, he said.

Despite the song making waves in South Africa, especially on Spotify and Apple Music, Haukongo is unable to balance the promotion of his single while preparing for upcoming exams.

“Throughout school, I always loved learning, and prioritised academics. Throughout my time at St. George’s, I received various academic awards, including the Anchor Award (top student of grade) for Grades 8 – 11, and the Dux Award in Grade 12. I am currently a second-year Mechatronic Engineering student at Stellenbosch University. I plan on gaining work experience and potentially furthering my education after completing my current studies,” he said.
