Heita claims WBA Pan- African title

Namibian boxer Mateus Heita secured a dominant second-round knockout victory over South Africa’s Thato Bonokoane to claim the World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan-African featherweight title at the MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing Academy’s ‘Together as One Part 13’.

The event was held at the Windhoek Country Club and Casino in the capital.

Saturday’s victory marked his 12th consecutive win, and solidified his position as a rising star in Namibian boxing.

Following the win, the newly crowned champion expressed his desire to compete at a higher level, aiming to challenge the world›s best boxers in his division.

“It was a do-or-die fight for me, as this was my last chance to redeem myself – and such opportunities don’t come easily. I had to seize the moment, and I got the job done,” he said.

Looking ahead, he added, “I believe I’ve accomplished a lot here, at home – and now it’s time for me to fight on a bigger stage against the best fighters in the world who are in my division”.

Meanwhile, Bonokoane acknowledged his skill, saying “I couldn’t keep up with him. He’s a good fighter, and I’m glad I faced him”.

In the supporting bouts, Jeremiah Nakathila returned to winning ways by knocking out Zimbabwe’s Jeremiah Mhere in the sixth round in the main supporting bout of the night.

Martin Mukungu also extended his record to 12 wins after defeating David Shinuna in a split decision.

An exhibition match between Pieter Kotze and Phillipus Shikongo ended in a draw.

In other bouts, Nestor Thomas lost to Jonathan Kasheta in a bantamweight six-rounder by split decision, while Erastus Shapaka maintained his unbeaten record by defeating Tobias Amunyela.

Sam Mathews showcased his prowess with a first-round knockout of John Shitilitha in under 40 seconds, and Jonas Jonas secured a win over Nestor Amukoto in the welterweight division.

Tangeni Salomon secured a win against Paulus Iipinge, while Jonas Lukas stopped Martin Kampuru from winning the lightweight division.

Also speaking after the bonanza, promoter and trainer Nestor Tobias said he was happy with the talent that is constantly showing up.

“We have so much talent in the country, and we need to work together to ensure that they realise their dreams,” he said.
