Heita to co-headline Nujoma tribute boxing bonanza

Windhoek will come alive with boxing action when Namibian boxer Mateus Heita defends his WBO Africa Featherweight Title during the “Tribute to His Excellency Dr Sam Shafishuna Nujoma Boxing Bonanza” at the Windhoek Showgrounds on 9 May.

The event, organised by the MTC Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy in partnership with the Sam Nujoma Foundation, aims to celebrate the legacy of Namibia’s Founding Father, Sam Nujoma, who has long supported the development of boxing in the country and serves as the academy’s patron.

Nicknamed “The Beast,” Heita will co-headline the boxing spectacle against South Africa’s Zolisa Batyi. The Namibian boxer previously made headlines when he stepped into the ring at Madison Square Garden, where he fought American world champion Bruce Carrington in a memorable bout.

Fans can also expect action from several local talents, including Fillipus Nghitumbwa, Harry Simon Jr, Joy Nangolo, and Martin Mukungu, alongside other promising prospects.

Promoter Nestor Tobias said the main objective is to boost Heita’s international ranking and open the door to another world title opportunity.

“Boxing is not just about the fighters in the ring. It stimulates many sectors of the economy, from fitness and medical services to catering, marketing and entertainment,” Tobias said.

He added that such events also provide young people with opportunities to transform their lives through sport.

Meanwhile, Heita invited Namibians to come out in large numbers and support the event.

“I would like to invite all my fans, government leaders, members of parliament, ministers and traditional authorities to come and witness one of the greatest athletes in action here in the Land of the Brave. I have learned a lot from my last 16 fights, and now I am ready to take on the world,” the champion said.

Organisers also announced that the Dr Sam Shafishuna Nujoma Boxing Bonanza will become an annual event in honour of the country’s Founding Father.

General tickets will cost N$100, while VIP tables are priced at N$20 000.
