Heroes’ Day remembrance goes to Oshikoto

OMUTHIYA – The Heroes’ Day commemoration preparatory committee met on Monday to discuss and prepare for this year’s event that is taking place in the Oshikoto regional capital, Omuthiya,.

The committee chairperson and regional governor Penda Ya Ndakolo said they have received instructions from President Nangolo Mbumba to host this year’s Heroes’ Day commemoration in Oshikoto.

“I know our communities were disappointed by the previous relocation of venues, but we are very grateful to be given a second chance,” said Ndakolo, referring to the decision by government to relocate the commemorations from Windhoek to Omuthiya.

He encouraged everyone to attend and show their patriotism on 26 August.

The chairperson of the Oshikoto Regional Council, Samuel Shivute, appealed to the members of the preparatory committee to be committed and dedicated during the preparation of the 34th Heroes’ Day commemoration in Omuthiya.

“I would like to remind everyone that the success of that event requires constant consultation and proper communication. So let us all play our part in performing this national duty, as well as execute our required roles to the best of our abilities on time,” he said.

The chief regional officer, Christella Mwenyo, said the success of the event will come from their preparation and, therefore, they should understand cooperation and collaboration.

“For these two months, let us prioritise this event so that at the end of the day, people will see what Oshikoto is capable of,” said Mwenyo.

She urged the committees to take their tasks seriously, and consult the chairperson of the national committee so that they are in line with what is done.

“We only have two months and two weeks to prepare for this event, so that at the end of the day people will have good things to say about the region once we are done with this,” said Mwenyo.

Last year, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology’s (MICT) executive director Audrin Mathe said the 33rd Heroes’ Day commemoration that was scheduled to be held at Omuthiya was moved to Windhoek.

The change of venue was necessitated by the state visit of the president of the Republic of Cuba president Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudes to Namibia.
