A suspect, who was on the run after allegedly driving into a 27-year-old man on Saturday night after an alleged argument at Kayirayira, west of Rundu, appeared in the Rundu court yesterday following his arrest on Sunday.
The suspect, Maketje Jeremia, 26, was charged with attempted murder, driving without a driver’s licence, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to render assistance to an injured person. Maketje was reported to be the driver of the white Mazda Midge, bearing the registration number N1994RU, that was involved in the incident.
It is alleged that after getting into an argument Jeremia reportedly got into his car and drove recklessly and inconsiderately and so knocked down the victim Sakandjo Paulus Malema, 27, in the street. After running down the victim he apparently drove away, leaving the seriously injured Malema helpless on the ground.
Jeremia was granted bail of N$2 000 and his case was postponed to October 1 to allow time for additional police investigations to be completed and also to enable him to secure the services of a lawyer. He appeared before Magistrate Barry Mufana, while Tjeripo Muruko prosecuted.
