By Kuvee Kangueehi Windhoek WBA Pan African World Lightweight Champion Paulus “Hitman” Moses will start his first title defence against challenger Misheck Kondwane of Zimbabwe. The fight which will be part of the 16th Anniversary Independence Celebrations will take place on Monday evening at the Windhoek Country Club Resort and Casino. Moses, who stopped spindly-legged South African pugilist Simphiwe via a spectacular sixth round stoppage to win the vacant WBA Pan African World Lightweight title in a 12-round contest, said he is fit and ready for the fight despite being inactive for over five months. Simphiwe on the night had a poor fight despite his impressive record 17 wins, seven losses out of his 24 fights. Since winning the WBA Pan African Lightweight World Champion title last year, Moses has become hot property and various boxers on the continent have been lining up to get a fight against him. Last year Moses was set for a fight on October 1 in a warm-up duel with Peter Adams, where a victory would have enabled him to contest for the IBO title, which is currently in the hands of South African Isaac Hlatshwayo. However, the match that was set for the Ongwediva Trade Fair Centre was cancelled at the eleventh hour. At the handing over ceremony, Telecom Namibia’s Acting Head of Corporate Communications & Public Relations Oiva Angula said the company is proud to be the main sponsor of this boxing event and it was a privilege last year to sponsor the WBA Pan African Lightweight World Champion title fight between Moses and Simphiwe. “This year as a company it is even a greater honour to be the main sponsor as our own boxing celebrity ‘Hitman’ defends his title against Kondwane from Zimbabwe.” Angula said the title fight would be the perfect centrepiece to the Independence Day celebrations and a truly Namibian company, Telecom Namibia is proud to step up as the main corporate sponsor again. Telecom Namibia has sponsored the event to the tune of N$181 700, of which N$50 000 goes to advertising and promotional activities. Angula added that as a company Telecom has put aside N$240 million to expand and fortify the telecommunication network this year. “Our activities go beyond the business of providing communication services and we have been committing financial resources to help support community projects, programmes and events such as the upcoming boxing match.”
