RUNDU – As Rundu beach prepares for the holiday season, the CEO of the Rundu Town Council Romanus Haironga has appealed to Namibians to come in numbers, enjoy themselves responsibly and take care when swimming in the river.
Rundu beach usually this time of the year attracts many visitors, local and out of town and they flock to the beach to have a great time and eat braaied meat also known as kapana, while some prefer to swim in the river and have fun.
The town council has already awarded the contract to three local businesses to host this year’s Rundu beach festivities which are expected to start on December 15. “People will sell refreshments, entertain and sell food at the beach – this is like a market day for businesses,” said Haironga.
The CEO however urged the three companies awarded the tenders to adhere to the rules and conditions of the law and the town council with regard to selling liquor. “We expect the three companies to adhere to what is expected of them and alsoensure the security of people. They must clean the place every day,” he further stated.
Haironga cautioned drunk people to refrain from swimming in the river as this could endanger their lives.
“If you don’t know how to swim you should not try to be a swimmer, the river is a dangerous place. We advise if you have consumed alcohol not to swim because you might drown among other risks,” the CEO appealed to holidaymakers.
The beach is usually open throughout the year and people can only come with their refreshments but during December it is handled professionally whereby a tender is given out to local people to go and sell refreshments and food, manage the area and host a new year’s bash where various artists perform to entertain the visitors to the beach.
The beach will officially open on December 15 next week until the end of the holiday season.
