The University of Development Studies in Ghana last Friday in the city of Accra, conferred a honorary doctorate degree on former president Hifikepunye Pohamba. The citation read that Pohamba’s “selfless commitment to the service of his country and humanity, his remarkable courage in the struggle for the emancipation of the Namibian people, an avowed crusader for peace and development, for being an astute advocate for the rule of law and for his exemplary leadership, the Academic Board and the Governing Council of the University for Development Studies confer on you an Honorary Doctorate (Honours in Causa) in the Doctor of Letters category”. Vice-Chancellor Prof Gabriel Teye and the Registrar Dr A.B. Zakariah noted that many other awards were conferred on Pohamba during his tenure as Namibian president. Awards include the 2010 Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), Food Security Policy Leadership Award, an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) of the University of Namibia, the Most Ancient Order of the Welwitschia Mirabilis, which is Namibia’s highest award, and the 2014 Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.
