SWAKOPMUND – Jan Carlo Horn said he will never forgive Jandre Dippenaar.
Horn is the the father of Jan Carlo (JC) Horn Junior, one of six people who died when two cars crashed on the Henties Bay road nearly 10 years ago.
JC, along with two others, including his girlfriend, were passengers in the vehicle that was being driven by Dippenaar when the incident occurred between Swakopmund and Henties Bay.
During Dippenaar’s pre-sentencing trial in the Swakopmund Regional Court on Tuesday, Horn testified that although it is expected of him to forgive Dippenaar for causing his son’s death, it is impossible for him to do so.
“My son was a very careful driver – but one day he said to me, when he does, he is likely to die in a car accident because of other people’s negligence. This is exactly what happened. I lost my son through the carelessness of other people,” he said.
He further shared that his family has been struggling to cope with the loss, revealing that both he and his older son have had to rely on medication for their mental health in the years following the incident.
“Our lives are a living hell. My elder son has lost his best friend, and my wife and I have been deprived of the benefits that parents are supposed to reap from their children,” he added.
Meanwhile, Antonia Joschko, whose parents and sister also died in the accident, expressed disappointment that neither Dippenaar nor his family members reached out to her to offer condolences or apologies after the accident.
“He could have at least tried to reach out to me to show accountability or remorse for taking away my family from me, but he never did,” she said.
Joschko, who was only 16 at the time of the crash between the two vehicles, told the court that navigating life since losing her family was difficult.
She struggled with depression, and attempted suicide.
To this, Dippenaar expressed that he did not offer apologies to her because he had received instructions from his defence team not to contact her, as she was a State witness.
The trial continued yesterday.
