The clean-up campaign for Epukiro’s capital Omaueuozonjanda in the Omaheke region, is going ahead as planned.
Kaijetere Murangi, the constituency’s administrative officer, told New Era that residents heeded the call and made sure the eastern settlement maintains its clean status.
“This is our day three of the campaign. We are on the ground, and community participation speaks volumes. We are happy with the cooperation from the residents,” he said.
Murangi added that a healthy environment contributes to a healthy life, thus community members must play their part.
“We are heading towards the festive season, and people coming here for holidays must find this place clean and leave it clean,” he urged.
Despite the few cleaning materials they have at their disposal, Murangi commended the helping hand from of Epukiro Small Business for their support.
He also said the assistance from the Epukiro Women Farmers’ Association under Kavee Hambira, who made a tractor available for the clean-up campaign, is likewise praise-worthy.
“We are also providing the participants on the ground with two meals per day, and that is aimed at energising the members,” he added.
However, the administrative officer is not happy with the dumping site at the settlement.
“It needs reconstruction, especially at the entrance, as the rubbish is blown away by the wind. Even the waste delivery place is not suitable for the purpose, and we need to do something,” lamented Murangi.
Among the affected farmers from Okozondje village is Ringo Siririka, who said their cattle were feeding on rubbish at the dumpsite, threatening the health of the livestock.
“This is a big concern, as our livestock are eating rubbish. My brother lost a cow which died after eating some of that rubbish. Something needs to be done, and it’s good that the clean-up campaign will make a difference,” he stressed.
The campaign ends today and Murangi requested other corporate companies to come on board and assist with its smooth running.
