Rap sparked her love of music throughout her school years, and she admired singers like Nicki Minaj. But since the release of her debut single “//gautere” featuring DJ Hoppy in 2019, Rencia Gontes, better known by her stage name Ricki G, has been immersed in the music industry.
Gontes (23) tells VIBEZ! that she developed a strong passion for music as a child, which inspired her to explore many genres—from soul to rap—before finally settling on Afro music as her specialty.
While the musician describes herself as someone who enjoys exploring various genres, she has recently been drawn to the vibrant fusion of Afro, reggae and dancehall music.
“This blend allows me to infuse elements of my native language, Khoekhoegowab, resulting in a fresh and distinctive sound that I’ve coined as Afro/Gaisa. It’s been an exciting journey as I contribute to the evolution of Damara music with this innovative approach,” she beamed.
“I embarked on my musical journey during my school years, honing my skills and passion for music,” the songbird said, as she recalls how her debut on the music scene marked quite a significant milestone in her career.
A few of her achievements include being part of the first solo album for Diyon from PDK’s ‘Time on my own’ with the song called ‘Rwata’.
“I worked with the best producers in the game like Mr Glo Solani, who recorded my single called ‘Trouble’. I also worked with DJ Kboz and Kallo on the Beat, and through them, I was able to build a connection with different clients and companies. I am so grateful,” she told VIBEZ!
Gontes draws inspiration from the emerging young talent in Namibia, each bringing unique styles and flavours to the music scene. Internationally, she admires artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Diamond Platnumz, and Tiwa Savage for their contributions to the Afrobeat genre, which she resonates deeply with, and dreams of collaborating with them some day.
The songbird believes there’s immense potential for growth in the Namibian industry if producers and artists unite to build a more collaborative and supportive environment.
Together, she said, they can attract international attention and opportunities for business deals, elevating Namibia’s entertainment industry onto the global stage.
“To all my fans out there, I urge you to check out my single ‘Trouble’, which has been out for a while, but definitely deserves some more love. And as for what’s next, stay tuned because big things are on the horizon for Ricky G. I’m currently working on some exciting projects that are bound to make waves.
I have a little surprise for my fans… I call them lovies. We are slowly getting there; it’s just a matter of time till the lovies react to a hit song, but I am grateful for my lovies who stuck by me since day one. I owe u guys a Grammy Award, so keep your eyes and ears peeled because I’m about to take things to the next level,” she enthused.
